Three types: Single domain, Multi-domain, Wildcard domain

Single domain TLS/SSL certificate

As the name suggests, it secures a single domain name. But note that when you apply for a certificate for the domain name example.com, www.example.com will also be covered. So, when you only buy a certificate for a single main site, such as example.com, or the api server api.example.com, then you may choose a single domain certificate.

Multi-domain TLS/SSL Certificate

A multi-domain SSL certificate can protect multiple domain names, which can be multiple single domain names, multiple wildcard domain names, or any combination of single domain names and wildcards.

Wildcard TLS/SSL Certificate

Wildcard certificates can protect all sibling subdomains under a domain name, such as *.example.com domain.example.com, hosting.example.com, any.example.com and other unlimited subdomains. When your business has many sub-domains under same domain, a wildcard SSL certificate is a perfect choice.
